Behavioral Triggers: Sending Emails Based on What Contacts Actually Do

5 min read

Triggered emails are sent in response to something a contact did - visited a page, clicked a link, opened an email, filled out a form. Because they are timed to a specific action, they arrive when the contact is most engaged. Triggered emails consistently outperform scheduled broadcasts on every metric.

The Most Valuable Behavioral Triggers

  • Pricing page visit: send a comparison guide or case study within the hour
  • Feature or product page visit (repeated): flag for sales follow-up
  • Content download: follow up with the next logical piece of content in the journey
  • Demo booking confirmation: begin the pre-demo nurture sequence
  • Trial signup: begin the onboarding sequence immediately
  • Inactivity after trial start: send a usage tip or offer help

Setting Up a Behavioral Trigger

To trigger an email based on website behavior, your email platform needs to receive an event from your website - either through a JavaScript snippet, a form integration, or a webhook. When that event fires, the platform checks whether the contact exists in the database, and if so, initiates the defined automation.

Timing Matters

The closer in time a triggered email arrives to the triggering action, the higher the response rate. An email sent within 10 minutes of a pricing page visit converts significantly better than the same email sent the next morning. Where possible, minimize the delay between action and response.

Avoiding Over-Triggering

Too many triggers firing for the same contact creates an overwhelming inbox experience. Build suppression rules: if a contact is already in an active sequence, delay or suppress new triggers. Set minimum intervals between triggered emails for the same contact. Review your trigger logic quarterly to make sure contacts are not caught in conflicting automations.
